In Memoriam:   Fred Webbing

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Fred Webbing, a long-standing and highly valued member of our Club.
Fred served as Treasurer for many years, often hosting committee meetings at his and Jean’s home in Fakenham. During the years when the Gardening Club held traditional shows, with trophies awarded for the highest points across various classes, Fred created an innovative Excel spreadsheet to calculate the results before the end of each show—an impressive feat that greatly supported the smooth running of these events.
Beyond his dedication to the Gardening Club—formerly known as the Fakenham and District Horticultural Association—Fred was an enthusiastic jazz lover. He and Jean shared a passion for jazz music and were actively involved in running the Dereham Jazz Club for many years.
Fred also held a prominent position within the National Iris Society, where he was a senior member and, at one point, possibly served as President. His contributions to the Society were recognised with a medal for his service. He maintained strong connections with iris breeders in both the UK and the USA, cultivating many rare and unusual varieties in his garden. Members will fondly remember the open garden evenings he hosted, where he generously shared his knowledge and love of plants.
Fred was a tireless worker, a respected Vice Chairman, and an outstanding Treasurer. His dedication helped steer the Club through challenging times. He will be remembered not only for his contributions but also for his warmth, character, and genuine love for horticulture and community.
A few years ago, Fred and Jean relocated to be closer to their daughter. While we are not currently aware of the funeral arrangements, we will share any details as they become available. In the meantime, we have sent our heartfelt condolences to Jean and the family.
Fred will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
